Violets, trout lilies and spring beauties

poke through the duff,

trillium follow

and pink lady slippers.

Now after warm rain

the red efts emerge,

with their soft

bodies and tiny feet,

navigating

the open woodlands

with delicate deliberation –

like young women

studying their first garden party

as they hesitate

near the roses.
